After suffering two strokes in her early 40s, Joanne felt isolated and struggled to find somewhere to fit her needs—until she ‘bit the bullet’ and gave Clifford House a go.
“I first had a stroke three years ago, when I was 42. I’m at that age where I feel like I shouldn’t be having strokes, and I was feeling really sorry for myself – it was as if my world had ended.
My occupational therapist told me about Clifford House; she said it could get me out of the house, you can do activities and they can even give you free transport.
I thought to myself, ‘I’ll bite the bullet and give it a go.’ Jill gave us a tour and even though I’d been dubious, I got really good vibes. On my first day, I tried the Living Well class, which was all about managing tiredness and fatigue, then went to the cinema club in the afternoon. I had a really good time!
At Clifford House, they’re brilliant. The team are so welcoming and they’re so friendly, and even if you don’t want to come to an activity you can just sit in the garden.
As a person who had a stroke so young, I was really down in the dumps. You think to yourself, ‘my world’s ended.’ You think you’re on your own. But somewhere like Clifford House, it gives me that something to look forward to.
“Clifford House gives me something to look forward to. Now I can focus on what I can do, instead of on what I can’t do.”
I was always an active person and I’ve had to give up on so many things – driving, for example. Instead of focusing on the things I can’t do, Clifford House helps me to focus on the things I can do.
If there’s anybody like me who’s uncertain about coming to Clifford House, they should come. Everything is under one roof, everything is free. If you’re struggling to get here they provide you with transport. People my age, they need to get on board.”
